Why translating content?

60% of online content is in English, even though only 16% of the world population speaks English, according to data gathered by VisualCapitalist. Developing countries are the biggest Bitcoin users. For instance, the top countries on Binance are Turkey, Russia, Brazil, Argentina, and Vietnam (Source). On Bitrefill users mostly come from: the US, El Salvador, Venezuela, Afghanistan, and Germany (Source). India, Pakistan, Ukraine, Kenya, Nigeria, and the Philippines are also major countries for Bitcoin (Source 1, Source 2).

Therefore translating the PlebNet wiki into more languages is essential to ensure global adoption of Lightning, especially in countries that need it the most.

How to start a new translation

Once logged in, follow the following steps:

  • Go on the page you want to translate, for instance, the Main Page,
  • Click on the link "Translate this page" at the top of the page,
  • In the top right-hand corner click on the blue link "English" (in "Translate to English") to change the target language. For instance, if you want to translate the page into Hindi, write "Hindi",
  • Two columns will appear: on the left, the original English language content, on the right, the content in your target language, which is probably blank if you're starting a new translation,
  • Click on one English paragraph on the left, a text field appears, translate the content, and then click on "Publish translation".
  • Make sure you keep Mediawiki text formatting such as = for titles. For more information on Mediawiki text formatting, click here.

You don't need to translate everything all at once. Once you have translated at least one paragraph a page is automatically created. Untranslated paragraphs will be displayed to readers in English. Go back on the English content and it should be visible at the top of the page. The page's URL is ENGLISH_NAME/LANGUAGE_CODE. All language codes are available here.

How to modify an existing translation

Go to the page in your target language, for instance Main_Page/es and click on the "Translate" tab at the top of the page.
